about moving…

our last flat was not bad, but it was also not the best one… my beloved wife told me. We (She) decided to go on a hunt for a new flat. We called our favorite broker and he showed us roughly estimated 100000 flats in greater Maadi. The one was to small, the other to big, the third to dark and the others had a too tiny balkony. It is not easy to find exactly what you are looking for in Cairo. But the search itself is not uncomfortable. You tell the broker what you are looking for and he will show you some eligible objects, more or less…

For sure the brokers have their own interests and sometimes it is better to negotiate directly with the owner of the flat…so far he or she speaks english. And you should check everything in the new flat, the AC, the water, the tables and the chairs (!), the matresses and the little details, which may tell you a lot of things about the philosophy of the owner. (for example how the silicone is made in the bathroom and how the wall mounting is done). And do not forget to check the counter for electricity and water… otherwise it could give a little surprise… also from deeper interest are the prices for the trash removal and the house keeper (Boreb) and everything else, that might cause expenses.

But… finally… we found what we were looking for. Almost. But this is nothing special for Egypt; also in Germany it is difficult to find the perfect flat, but it is much more exhausting there and you have to fight for a flat. This is much more relaxed in Egypt. And yesterday we moved and everything that was promised by the owner is done… and we had a very quiet and cool night… without dog-terror, testosterone-manipulated-motorcycles or shop roller shutter closing during midnight with a noise of an airplane crash… but what we really missed is the call of the imam… you really get used to it and the call is also a good guide for time management, somehow.

post revolution and western media

On Friday and Saturday last week the army tried to disperse a demonstration on midan tahrir after the curfew began. Many people were injured and following egyptian media at least two dead.

The mood of the people at the moment is completely different to the mood before the revolution. All over the city people try to do business as usual and to revive the economy.

The army tries to substitute the police while the police is trying to organize itself after the revolution. But the army has not the training to work properly as a police force. And there are still people of the old regime in charge who try to find their own best way through all this.

So. Things are more complicated than they might seem.

the news…

The news from Cairo… heavy rain and thunderstorm during the week. Egyptians are wondering about the weather and try to suck up the water on the streets with slurping cars… but from time to time the sun comes out and we are heading directly to the beach, somethere in Egypt… the students are smart and eager to learn, most often it makes fun to work with them… If there is a hell, it is egyptian traffic. Especially if there was something like rain. Revolution is going on and things stay exciting. Somehow.

in between

today is the big day all over Egypt… people are about to vote about their new constitution. The city is as usual… but everyone is talking about the same topic. Meanwhile we wanted to be outside Cairo during the vote… for several reasons. Now we are back again.

arms…

Egyptians are amring themselves… almost everybody seems to wear a weapon at the moment. Although it is very quiet during the night and the morning you can feel the tension. GUC rescheduled their buses because of security reasons so nobody is forced to be out of a safe place after it became dark. There are rumors all around about killings, rapings, hijackings and all the other evil stuff… but the rumors can’t be approved by newspapers or other medias. But the rumors become very mighty at the moment. Latest rumor is, that the militay intervend on a demonstration at the GUC. I was there during the demonstration of students. No military was seen. But rumors spread with an unbelievable speed all over Egypt…

living under the curfew…

…has its positive effects. The city was never as quiet in the night as at the moment. On the other hand it is quite boring and cab drivers do not dare to drive long distances after 11.00pm, restaurants and bars are closing at 11.00pm.

things are changing…

…very fast. Students are protesting in the university and the students office announced the foundation of a students council, Skype and Youtube are allowed from now on and the chairman of the GUC invited all groups of staff to listen to their problems. The mind of the revolution is going to spread till it reached every corner of this country. As always the revolution is in danger to devour its children. At the moment almost everyone is protesting against something or for something. The ghost of revolution may turn into a demon…

responsibility

It is amazing… people all over the city are occupied with cleaning, coloring, planting… whatever is to do to make the city, the country, more beautiful. Now it is THEIR country and for the moment it seems as they would like to take care of it. It seems to be a difference if someone can believe to have the power to change things or if someone has to give all the power to the ones above him. Children, women, older people…everyone is on the streets to pimp the city. Egyptians are an amazing, wonderful people. I would have never dreamed of that it could be possible to change a country within 3 weeks in such a peaceful way, exactly during the semester break. My deepest respect, Egypt! And stay on track…

And… it is still rolling… students told me today that they are going to establish a students council… and if not permitted they will do, what they practised to do… fine! And not only stundents… you can find it everythere…

back… first impressions…and something else.

36 hours since my arrival in Cairo. In a whole – nothing changed. If there wouldn’t be all the tanks around, their muzzle most often pointed exactly in the direction I am coming from, the hundreds of military persons and especially this indescribable tension and atmosphere. You can feel it, but I can only try to find the right words: It is “in between”, everything seems to be possible, the good things and the bad things, there is hope mixed with fear and the knowledge, that the ones who supported the regime are still on deck, hidden or obvious. The people now mention what really happened. Not only the resignation of the president but also the resignation of a hundred of thousand tourists, the loss of famous artworks, the loss of many jobs and the loss of, primarily, security. Democracy is only a symptom of a special kind of behaviour. And this behaviour is not as common or god given as it seems like and maybe doesn’t fit to every culture in the same way, especially the democracy we are used to. The big word “democracy” is only a hull, that has to be filled with content. And the inflational use of the d-word is surely not in its sense. What are the basic needs of humans? Maybe these basic needs are a base for a happy life, however this is organised. You cannot eat democracy. But of course you might find the best way to produce food with free minded people in a good mood who dare to say what they want and think without having to fear any kind of sanctions. But to achieve this it not done by labeling.
